The new system I built is up and humming. In the day and 1/2 since coming online late Saturday it had earned 800+ Malaria credits. It's running E@H on the gpu and occasionally pulls down an E@H cpu task...not something I wanted, but appear to be stuck with. I guess the Malaria LT debt gets too high and forces an E@H cpu task down.

Not sure what this system will produce daily, but I'm hoping for around 3000-4000 credits/day between E@H and Malaria.

That is VERY good Randy!!! I am glad it is a reputable place, I will be looking for my new motherboard there soon, first I need to figure out what kind I need! I think it is a "B" board, but I am not sure. It is a regular mb that needs to handle a dual core Intel P4/775 3.2ghz with HT and is an 'Extreme Edition' cpu, but I would like to get one that has at least one pci-e slot on it, of course, and can handle upto at least 4 gig of ram. AND be an inexpensive board!! I can wish can't I, it is almost Christmas!!

Good luck on getting the right MB. These older boards can be hard to find and pretty tricky to boot.

New system is showing some funkiness. I believe the problem is the BOINC version I'm using. When I first cranked it, it downloaded a full cache of Malaria cpu, and a full cache of E@H gpu WUs. Now it has a full cache of E@H gpu, almost NO cache of Malaria cpu, and a smallish cache of E@H cpu.

It keeps requesting Malaria gpu...which doesn't exist, and then downloads ONE Malaria cpu WU. Not sure what can be done to tweak it. I could try to downgrade the BOINC version, but then it downloads too much Malaria cpu WUs and goes into EDF mode.

Anyway, it's crunching along and adding to RAC, so I'm...

WINNING!!!

Berkeley has been working for a LONG time to get the cpu and gpu cache problems fixed when having both crunching in the same pc, I am not sure it is fixed even now but the newest versions are your best bet. I NEVER crunch both cpu and gpu units for the same project on the same machine because of it. Problem is how do you differentiate when you want to treat them the same? They want them to be the same in some areas but obviously can't be in all areas and they have been trying to find a compromise for EONS!!!

Yes I know I will have problems, that IS my problem. I made the mistake a long time ago of putting a REAL quad core on the board it came with and now can't find that same board anywhere. Periodically I look then a long time goes by without me looking etc, etc. I found one that may work and the next time I am over at the store where I bought the cpu I will ask them if it will work. They can't get a board anymore so maybe they will help me find one.

Good morning you guys!
TV seems nice got to work on the keyboard though

It would have been easier to get up and use the keyboard. First I had to login. Using the 'keyboard' on the tv is an onscreen thing, i have a remote that came with it that controls the pointer, liek a mouse but you wave the remote in the air and it senses motion. the keyboard is two rows of letters in lwoercase, or click a button for two rows of letters in uppercase, or click another button for numbers. it is not easy to type that way.

Actually it would be easier to use my smart phone, since at least typing on that is using my fingers on a touch screen keyboard.

The tv however is smart, i have the blu-ray hooked to it. without me doing any programming or setup for this, if I turn the tv off (or sleep timer turns it off) it tells the blu-ray to turn off and go to bed too. Now what else those two talk about i don't know but they seem to like each other.

Unfortunately it will not turn on the koffee maker in the morning when i wake up. I'll add that comment to requested features.

Looking forward to a brown Christmas! I'm hoping for no snow. I don't care how cold it gets as long as the car starts, and I can always plug them in. But I don't have to shovel cold.

No white (or brown) stuff here (except the peanut butter kookies), Although it has been overcast all day, no sun shine.

I've got shorts on and the window open, and with the heat from the komputers i'm still warm.

I've been in the kitchen all afternoon with the oven on. I made 4 dozen peanut butter kookies. I was going to make a krock pot full of chili, but got started late, so i'll do that tomorrow.

Good news is that one komputer is running liquid kooled now, passing 1 day of operation. I had a leak in the reservoir tank from around a seam, not from any fittings, which is like a one in a million thing. With that luck I should be winning. So I finally got one working, except i'm down one gpu as I might have broke it. The other unit has yet to be konverted, i'm now waiting on some replacement parts.

At the moment the gpu's are buring at 78 and 69C and the liquid after kooling is 57C versus 72 to 97C for the air cooled ones.

Plus all the heat from the liquid kooled unit is going into an exhaust hose, none escapes into the area around the komputers or me. Much quieter too except i can't tell from all the noise still from the ait kolled gpu's. i've got 6 quiet fans on the liquid system and that is less noise than one gpu fan screaming away at 80%, not to mention 3 running now or 6 as it was.

Gotta go, another kookie is ready to eat....

10 million is ALOT and is a big milestone!!!

Keith don't eat too many cookies or you will need to be rolled out of the house on Monday!! I AM glad to hear the liquid cooking is going well though, except for the cracked tank! My wife was complaining about me not turning the heat on yet so I had to closed a window in the basement that was letting all the pc heat out, it is now MUCH warmer upstairs but ROASTING downstairs!!! Yesterday it was in the low 40'sF outside but pushing 80F in my basement!!

Mikey, assuming you have central air, you might want to turn the furnace fan to the 'on' position. Make sure the 'cold air' return from the basement vent is wide open and you'll move the hot basement air into the rest of the house.

My new system is running @around 5-6K credits per day. I opened it up to the E@H Gamma Ray search a few days ago, but then shut that off. One WU takes ~54,500 secs (15 hrs) to run and I think they're only worth ~370 credits each.

WINNING!!!

Yeah I'm getting the liquid kooling figured out. There was a learning curve and no local shops carry this type of gear and I don't know anyone else around hear that even does this. The one guy I knew has moved away, works for Google now.

I want to make some changes, my original design was ok, but when i actually fit in in the unit it did not come out as planned. Tubing is the cheapest item and the fittings can be reused so to make some changes, reroute some things is minimal cost, maybe not effort. I also want to add a second reservoir, to give it more fluid, it will take loger to circulate and have more time to kool down some, i think. I've got to get the other one converted.

I'm waiting on a box of parts, the replacement tank, i decided for 30 bucks it was easier for me to do it myseld than to send the whole controller/pump/reservoir back at my expense, wait for them to fix it and send it back to me. Plus i got a spare in case this sort of thing happens again. since the store i bough from was having another 10% off sale, i went ahead and ordered stuff to start my other three systems. But thsoe don't have gpus yet, so i won't actually build them yet. when i pick out a gpu i'll get the matching waterblock. In the mean time I ahve a lot of spare parts, and i can use some of those to try some experimental configurations.

What would be really kool is to route the tubing over to the window, that would be about 2 fett over and back. Get a spare cylinder tank and put it outside the window but inside the screen and route the house through my custom made panel that the exhast hose vents through. Then the liquid running through that tank would have the benefit of really kool air. I don't think it would freeze, it rarley gets that cold here. i'd have to check on the operation temps of fluid, but it is going to be hot anyay unless the system is turned off. I might jsut put the tanks inside the window on the sill, so i can see them, but if it is cracked a little cool air seeps in. Future designs to make it fun.

---

Well the chili is in the krock. It will be ready about 5pm tonight. Hard part will be smelling it all day long.

Well I just spent like 4 hours trying to get this third gpu working. After numerous tests, power ups and downs I finally figured it was skewed in the bus slot and a 1 cent strap around a liquid fitting and the shelf above pulling it up some did the trick. Now i'm liquifing with 3 gpus back on boinc.

Kool too. At the moment my temps are 80C, 73C, 72C with little noise, which beats out the air cooled with a gpu fan screaming at 80% and i've got temps of 94C, 93C and 76C. The liquid has cut out the noise and some heat.

Smell that chili. I've now got time for a knap before dinner in an hour.

Keith that's because you have like 15 pc's running there! I know you don't but with the gpu's running pc's just pump out the heat. My basement is up into the mid to upper 70's now, I may have to open the window again!!!

It's only 5 cpus and 7 gpu's. But this house is built air tight, it is hard to get air flow though it and then there also is the problem I can heat up here with computers, but the central air controller is outside my room door, so if I ahve my door open it does not run and the roomy freezes.

Not to worry tough. my next bunch of liquid parts arrives Thursday.

Even the unit i did is running hot, becuase it gets heat blow back from the other one so it has not much kool air to kool with. I think once i convert those three gpu's too, things will cut way down. They will both have more kool air to kool with and a majority of the heat will be going directly into the vent hose, out the window instead of lurking around them.

I am guessing he was meaning their attitude and how they are in general, Terriers can be very ornery! I had a Wired Hair Fax Terrier as a kid and it bit my sister...TWICE!! It taught me to have my dog before my kids so I could teach it to be mellow and not care if its tail was pulled, the food bowl removed while it was eating, etc, etc. When the kids did that the dog did not react, which is a good thing! I had a 50lb Shepherd/Husky/Lab mix that mostly would just lay there and make you step over her! Every once in a while though I would have to hold her upside down on top of me, I was laying on the floor, and then she would calm down again and listen to everything I told her to do. You have to hold them until they give up, be careful though their heads are hard as rocks and they swing that thing around trying to get free. After 2 to 3 minutes mine would quit resisting and I would let her go and she would listen again, I was the Leader of The Pack again!

You can't be winning because it is Thursday !

Don't woory, I'm not winning either. My unit #2 is back to it's BSOD tricks. I turned off screensaver and manually opwoer monitor off, so when it dies I can power on monitor and see why. The last death was the keybaord and mouse were dead and the screen frooze, no gpu activity as all three went cold, I could tell by liquid temp. So even sometimes when it dies, it does not even blue screen. I'm again baffled as to the cause as I thawt I got rid of this and ahd it running good. Now it won't run more than a day or 2 and being it's Thursday, i did it again, so i'm not winning.

There is a website and software that will tell you if all of your drivers are up to date, I think drivers were the problem last time weren't they?

No, it was the bios setting of 95MHz for the 100Mhz bus.

No the stupid help in windows is useless. Putting in an error code says "It's the drivers of hardware". Well what else could it be, everything is either a driver or hardware. Maybe it is the underware.

I think it is a gpu not aligned in the socket. Like the one that gave me problems and I spent 4 days and countless hours to find out it i put a 1c strap on the end to hold it up it worked. I put antoher strap on the second one and a support psot under the third one down, which is the first. LAter i'll make some shorter support post to hold the 2nd and 3rd up from the first. The pcie slot end is ok and I have a support bar where the brackets are, but the other end where you put the pwoer wires in seems to be sagging and i think that is the whole problem. That is where i supported them, i'll find out later as I only did that this morning.

OK, this is like suppos to be the first day of winter, and it is 70F here. I guess that means we get no white stuff, unless you count the sand on the beach.

Hey SwiftMallard...I saw you over on MW and decided to put some effort towards it, I now have 2 5870's crunching for it right now, but since this weekend is VERY busy for me we decided to have my families Christmas this evening. Guess what I got.....TWO 5870 GPU'S!!!!!! That means that by early next week I should have 2 more 5870's up and running over there. I think that should make a dent in my RAC and keep me on the upward track for awhile longer, don't you think?! Of course it also means moving gpu's around again, and removing two slower ones, as I can't physically put any more pc's on line due to a lack of power!

ps Keith I have been removing the new Vista AV from my sons laptop, it is a virus if anyone is wondering, and in the process it killed his onboard keyboard and touchpad, I have been working for 3 hours trying to get it back up and running and it just won't do it!! The external usb ones work just fine, but the whole point of a laptop is to be able to use the touchpad and keyboard and they just aren't being seen at all! I am hoping I do not have to wipe it out and start over as he graduates this coming Spring and it is full of stuff he needs! As for backups, he has no clue what those are, he is a college kid things don't happen to them!! I kept asking him to bring it home with him so I could back it up but did he, no he did not!!

It is 29F right now and going up to a balmy 42F today. Will also be very windy (30mph gusts).

@Mikey, like you, we had our Christmas yesterday. Wife got a Kindle Fire from her son and his wife. Had too much to eat, of course. Going to take it easy today, so I am...

I got leaks for Chrismas.

After a lot of bucks and 30 days of waiting and work, then second system is leaking around the reservoir. same as the first system was which i've never put in a computer yet.

Plus yesterday during rebuilds, not one, but two temp sensors started leaking. I don't think it was anything to do with me, just poor workmanship by KOOLANCE.

Yeah, I'm very ...... off

Now i've got more things to repair. I'm afraid to put system one in place. With all the difficulties and crammed space this goes into, i'm thinking of a new layoout, which pretty much means an entire rebuild and trashin a lot of the tubing and repalceing it with longer runs. The fittings can all be reused so it is minimun expense to retube, but maximun effort.

not winning, don't expect to be for a long time.

I'm tanking a break from boinc.

I'm having more difficulties with my LCS, it not needs an entire rebuild to make maintenance easier and remove leaky components.

So i can't use one whole computer, excpensive computer, since i've waterblocked all the gpu.s, it is now a pile of expensive junk.

It's too hot in here and too noisy, i can't stand it anymore, so i need to power down the other gpus and stuff for a while.

It's a shame i can't enjoy my hobby.

Sorry to hear about that Keith. I've had lots of experience where switching to new hardware (technologies) it seems like one thing after another just blows up in my face.

OH YEAH!!! I am working on my sons laptop, he is just starting his LAST semester of college and he got another computer virus, he STILL believes all those darned stupid ads..'get this av it will fix your pc'. Well he got the 'Vista AntiVirus' which is itself a virus that you they then want you to pay 60 bucks to remove!!! I was able to FINALLY get Malwarebytes to remove it and then got bot it and Microsoft Security Essentials to come up with clean scans. The virus is gone but now so is his keyboard and touchpad, did I mention it is a LAPTOP!!! I have drivers so many times I am blue in the face, I even went to the Dell website, it is a Dell, and they have a 'fix my pc' section, it downloaded new drivers, just like I did but it still doesn't work!! It works fine with an external keyboard and mouse just not the internal ones!!! It will be going to the mom and pop pc store I like this morning, I am out of ideas!!

For some good news I uninstalled two 5770 gpu's and installed one 5870 in it's place and it is running just fine! AND since it is running on Moo and Santa visited them it is earning DOUBLE credits, like all the other gpu's over there! My RAC was just over 4 MILLION on Christmas Day and this morning was sitting at 3.7 MILLION with one gpu blue screened for over a day! I was out of town, my son was sleeping in the room etc, etc, etc lots of things converging at once, but it is now up and running again. I have already told PG not to send me any more work and hopefully one of those 5770's will replace an older Nvidia gpu this week. The other one should be a clean swap for a 4670 gpu running now.

Does that mean I am now WINNING?!!!

ps I forgot to say that I ALSO have ANOTHER 5870 to put in a machine still! I got LOTS of nice stuff for Christmas this year!!!

I forgot to say that I ALSO have ANOTHER 5870 to put in a machine still! I got LOTS of nice stuff for Christmas this year!!!

Boy did I have a fun time at Best Buy yesterday [not!].

My stepson gave me a $75 gift certificate to Best Buy for Xmas. My daughter gave me a $25 BB gift card. After buying a new freezer in November, I got a $15 Reward Zone certificate. So, with $115 worth of "free" stuff to get, I was off to BB.

I have recently set up a new system in the spare bedroom we remodeled (paint, new carpet, computer desk, new blinds). One piece missing was a UPS system; so that was first on my list. I also needed a better mouse for it. Then while browsing around, I found a DVD for $4.99 I wanted as well.

Well, the sticker on the shelf for the UPS said $59.99 for a 650VA UPS. I looked at the sticker as close as I could for any expiration date or whatever, but these old eyes aren't as good as they used to be, and the sticker was on the bottom shelf, next to the floor to boot.

Anyway, after a somewhat reasonable wait in line, everything was paid for and I took it all out to the car. [Un?]Fortunately, the old mental gears were still whirring and the total price paid just didn't seem to add up right. I checked the receipt when I got everything in the car, and they had charged me $79.99 for the UPS, not the shelf price.

Back inside; check the shelf sticker to verify I got the right product; get in line at Customer service; wait...wait...wait. Got to the register; walked her over to the shelf to see the sticker...she points out the sticker expired 12/24/11...written in micro-script at the very bottom of the sticker. I state that I need a magnifying glass to see that date and she walks me over to the service manager. He says--give him the price adjustment.

Now, because I had used a Reward Zone certificate, a gift certificate, and part of a gift card to pay for things, this adjustment was FAR beyond the experience of this rookie C-S cashier. Needless to say, after getting a more experienced person involved, along with the original cashier, and 30-40 mins since I reentered the store, I finally had my $20 price adjustment.

Yeah when I used to work at Best Buy they made it REAL easy to check out but a pain in the rear to return things! Once they have your money they HATE to even discuss giving it back!!! I am surprised they gave you your money back and not another gift card! I worked there, in the computer repair section, for over a year and will NOT shop there ever again! I live 30 miles South of Wash DC and there are literally THOUSANDS of places that are more friendly that LOVE my money just as much, but won't stab me in the back if things go badly!!! I too got a Best Buy gift card for Xmas and sold it to my wife for cash!!

I found a build your own pc at Tiger Direct for $400, it is an AMD X6 with case, ram, hard drive, dvd/rw, power supply and motherboard. I can't decide whether to get it or another fancy gpu instead! The X6 would easily replace an older dual core very nicely but a really nice gpu would give me even more RAC! I have some cpu only projects I need to hit some goals on yet so the extra cores would help there. Decisions, Decisions, any thoughts?

The AMD X2 4600 system I put online recently has a GT 520 card. Running E@H on GPU only, and MCN only on cpu...E@H gets ~5000 credits/day while MCN gets 600-1000 credits on two cores. This is pretty much a dedicated system. The graphics card is a LOW-END card.

A dedicated X6 would do 3x the credits for cpu only on MCN. I don't know what they would do on other projects...you do the math and decide.

I need to do some more WCG and Rosetta after that. I am trying to move Seti down in my overall stats. I have two WCG accounts, the one I am crunching for mostly is at position #11 World Community Grid 2,819,845.

Well John and Randy it is a new day for both of you and I hope it is better than the last one!

For me I went to the computer store and bought some parts, that means no X6 for me at least for right now. I do have some motherboards that are currently running quad core AMD chips that say they can be upgraded to the AM3 cpu, which is the X6, so options are still open but the motherboards are not new and they are working so I may not. I may have a look at Randy's place and see what they may have, but of course that is more expense!

I tried to put an AMD 5770 gpu into a machine yesterday and it just won't work!! I upgraded the psu to a 750 watt and it has a pci-e slot, an old one though...could that be the problem? Most new pci-e slots are blue, this is the older black one, my Nvidia cards work fine in the slot as does my 4670 gpu, but the 5770 just isn't found at all! It has 64 bit Win7 on the machine and I just upgraded it to 4 gig of ram!

I don't know that the slot color means anything at all. That older MB I ordered for the X2 system had a green PCIE slot. Probably just a manufacturer thing.

Did you try the 5770 in a different MB? It could be what's bad.

John I am VERY sorry to hear that, I hope her passage is smooth and as painless as is possible!!!

Randy I did some research and it indicates what version pci-e the slot complies to when it was made. Mine is a version 1.0 or 1.1 slot while the new blue ones are 2.1 slots. The new 2.1 cards will normally not work in an older 1.0 or 1.1 slot but lots of 2.0 cards should. Sometimes the BIOS can be updated to bring a 1.0 or 1.1 or even a 2.0 slot up towards the new 2.1 version, but not always.

I took my sons Dell laptop into my favorite pc store to get the keyboard and touchpad working and they called me up and said they used some 'tech only' av detector and it was so full of viruses they need to wipe it out to fix it. I told them not to do it and I would come pick it up, it cost me $75.00 for them to tell me they can't fix it!! I could have done that here at home and saved the money, I am not a happy camper right now as it seems they didn't even try to fix the touchpad and keyboard problem, they just tried to remove the viruses! They said the viruses on the machine kept them from running their av programs, don't they use self booting disks that don't use the OS on the system? They said since I was using a 'free' one it couldn't detect all the ones theirs will! I guess they are not nearly as good as I had thought they were! PCMagazine rates av programs every year and says the 'free' ones are almost as good and in some cases better than the 'pay' ones! I use Microsoft Security Essentials(MSSE) and MalwareBytes to keep all my pc's clean, the problem is the MalwareBytes does not do an auto scan or auto update, which is the ONLY difference between the 'pay' and 'free' versions, and my son did not update or scan his pc!! MSSE does auto update and auto scan all for free! I have waaaay too many pc's to be paying for stuff that can be gotten just as good for free! My son has ONE SEMESTER left in College and I am trying to save his pc from being wiped out now!!!

I know a rebuild is not fun, but it sounds like the only solution...other than limping along with external keyboard, etc.

Is the problem he has software on it and no install disks? If it's just data he needs, that can be offloaded and verified clean.

Doing regular AV scans + updates and...

WINNING!!!

I presume @Mikey that the external keyboard allows you to view all folders, including those for the installed OS?

If so, then you can move all the data files, and his collage work, to a 32GB flash drive. These can then be separately Virus checked and cleaned. After that a full deep Fdisk and reinstall of the OS would be done and the virus check/cleaned files files recopied from the Flash drive.

The OS should reactivate the internal keyboard, and it would give you the opportunity to install the latest BIOS flash.

Here's something mikey would like.

As you know I go on my annual vacation in February to visit my parents, which will now be just dad. This past year I had one other brother to show up. For next year, coming up soon, I got him and his new girlfriend to join in, our oldest brother, and maybe our forth brother if we can find him, he just moved and left no fowarding info with anybody but I sent a message to his daughter (my niece) and she might see him this weekend and she wants to come too to see Grandpa and her 3 Uncles.

And dad told me i'd never get the four of us brothers down there. It only took 2 days of planning to get everyone interested. I had planted the idea back when we four met up this year for the first time in, uh well, like 30 plus years. Each of us has seen the others one at a time but not all of us together at once in that time.

We will not all be there the entire time i'm there, but we will overlap at least 2-3 days all together.

Speaking of my niece, she is in the navy and currently is not far from Mikey, Half way between you and Alexandria. Works in the intellegence branch so I can't tell you what she does exactly, except it is embassy related for our guys going to a foreign embassy. She will be going to Afganastan next year for almost a year. I haven't seen her either in at least 10 years, last time she was small enough to sit on my knee.

So how's that for a family reunion, does that count ?

WINNING at the almsot last second !!!

Keith that IS cool!!! I hope the reunion works out for you, be sure to take your genealogy and show everyone, you just find out some new info! Keith a cool picture would be if you have a picture of her sitting on your knee as a little girl and then to reproduce that picture now that she is grown up.

Randy and John...I worked on the laptop for 3 hours yesterday trying to save the old OS, the computer shop gave up on it and refunded 1/3 of my money, giving me store credit. I like the place so said okay, what the heck it is free money! I finally gave up too and installed 64bit Win7 Ultimate on it, it has 4GB of ram so it is in good shape. After the initial install and the MalwareBytes and MSSE installs it found 100 updates, so I did those, I don't do the language updates but there were 40 more of those. I then installed my key on his MalwareBytes so it is now registered and will update itself and do regular DAILY scans! Next time it goes on sale he will be buying me a copy!! Today I have to install his programs and then copy back his documents and music. Yes the external keyboard and mouse worked just fine under the old OS just the internal ones would not, so I was able to get his documents and music off and they are safe. The problem with the old OS is that the Registry got messed up and Windows did not have any Restore Points, the virus took them out, and would not rebuild the Registry either! He is better off with Win7 than Vista Business anyway, and the pc now works too! I was going to do this for him come summer anyway, I just didn't plan on doing it while he was still in school!

Bymark if you do that with your resources we may actually have a chance to catch up to you!!! Why not move your gpu's over to Malaria and just hang out waiting for them to make a gpu app?!

Well my vacation was not planned as a full out reunion, but it seems to be turning out that way. Anyhoo, noone there will know anything that dad doesn't know, since these are all his descendants.

Well despite spending megabucks for new kruncherz this year with all sorts of fancy gizmos, i was able to put away fully amounts to my retirement accounts, increase other financial holdings, increase my savings, still pay off any bills and credit cards, i have ZERO debt as of now, keep a high miniumum safe level in my checking account and still have $306 bucks left over, so i'd say this year i was in budget.

However except for a few items, I don't see large computer expenses for a while, i hope these last 5 years. I will budget 1 gpu each for the three other systems and a waterblock and a few LCS parts I don't have like reservoirs for those, most of all the other iotems like controllers and fittings i have and then some. But i don't plan on doing those at least until after my annual vacation so it will be spring at least.

I'm tired, i'm gonna sleep for the rest of the year while WINNING !!!

What is this big "1" on my desktop calendar, oh it's a new day, month and year all at the same time.

Yeah, somehow i thought it would be different for me, it smeels the same as last year. It does not have the "new" smell.

Same ol' problems to work on. I got zero done on computers yesterday. While everyone else sleeps, maybe I can get a little done today.

I made so many mistakes last year with being preoccupied with to many issues.

While I was making backups yesterday for the last time of the year, in reviewing my financial data I realized I didn't sell off any stocks to take a loss on my taxes. I though I had done some earlier in the year but it turns out it was 2010. Oops. Fortunately I had one worthless one become delisted automatically so that counts and I have some loss to deduct. I already did a preliminary tax return. Nice thing about having a financial program like MoneyDance, I get a report out of it with all the info I need, if I mark certain entries on input, other fall into "tax related catagories" when entered so it does all the hard math. Then using TaxAct online I can quickly copy lasts years info over to a new return and then just fill in certain numbers. Took less than an hour and now I just need to wait for official forms from employeer and financial institutions and then proof all the figures. Again another hour but in a month or so, then i'm done with that. Pay them the $15 bucks and be done with it, efile and don't even have to write a check for any amounts it's all done electroinc transfers. It use to be such a burden. This year's was done in record time since I actually did them yesterday.

Heck my boss takes up until October with the accountant to get the business stuff done, he worries about that for 10 months. Me i have 12 months (less 2 hours) of no worries abouit it at all.

WINNING as I now have extra time this year, and we get an extra day next month, no extra charge, more krunch time this year !!!

That is very good Keith, so do you owe money or do you get a check back? I always work mine out so I get a check back, I know it is interest free to the Government but it is easier then coming up with the money for me! And besides it gives me a mini shopping spree in April!

I also like the extra day this year, it will help me move up even higher in my stats. 2011 was a VERY good year for me in that way!!!

Not so great a start to the New Year weather-wise. The First was heavy clouds all day with brief showers, but no sn*w. Today the high will be ~30F with 50% chance of the white stuff. Tonight and tomorrow I'm in the deep freeze...sending it your way next Mikey! Low tonight: 13F, high tomorrow: 21F. Scattered sn*w showers.

As far as BOINC is concerned, it looks like I have to do constant upgrades just to stay where I am now. Can't afford it if I want to retire before age 70. Besides, I just spent ~$2500 on new carpet and new appliances last year. I can take an energy credit deduction on the appliances however.

WINNING!!!

Don't forget Mikey, everyone else gets an extra day too.

I think it said I owe $160, but that is preliminary. At thsi time I don't know if the dividends are qualified or not, i need the actual forms from the bankers. That will lower it some. i also have to proof read my answers really well. Last year I think it was $13 I paid, year before may have been $69. Long time ago i got back lots, but don't anymore. Every once and a while i get a small amount back, i'm kind of in now the plus/minus 200 range. I usually also pay the state a few bucks, this year i think so far it said like 58. I didn't pay clsoe attention, i jsut wanted an estiamte at this point and it was within what i thought it would be. I don't care anymore weather i get some back, i just want to pay them to go away for another year, if you know what i mean.

The temp has dropped here, although i have trouble reading the outside temp as my sensot picks up heat from the computers pumping it out the window. yesterday it said in the 70's but it was 50F. today it must be more kolder as it actually says 59F. I need to move it, which i did but it didn't help. When i finish my mods, the vent will move its position in the window, then maybe i can play with the temp sensor placement and keep it out of the heat flow.

Got my travel tickets yesterday, $250 for this year, up from last years bargin of $198, but still better than some years where it was into the 300's. Talked to dad yesterday about everyone coming down, and so far it looks like 3 of us will make it, the 4th is missing.

Have to get back to my liquid cooling mods. I no longer feel excited about building this, as i've run into so may problems and setbacks, it is now become a full time job and a pain in the somewhere. i did nothing Saturday, only worked about 2 hours yesterday on it and nothing yet today. Altough i am close now. One thing to move still in the computer out of the way and one more tubing hose to cut, then i can begin leak checks outside the system with the new parts. May still be another week before it goess into place. Bad thing is i have 3 gpu's waterblocked that have been offline mostly since Thanksgiving. If i ever get this one going, then i've got to remod the second rig that has never been installed, cause it won't fit the way it is.

I guess i'm winning since it is a day off of w...

I KNOW what you mean Randy, I just spent 12K BEFORE rebates on a new Heat Pump system!!!

I am now looking at spending the rest of my Xmas money, you know how that goes, it is burning a hole in my pocket!! Anyway I am thinking about these parts:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0331614 for the motherboard

and http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0334811 for the cpu

then http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0361035 for the memory

That makes it an AMD X6 3.2ghz cpu, a gigabyte MB with 2 pci-e x16 slots and 8gb of DDR3-1066 memory. All for about $330.00 or so as I already have cases, hard drives, psu, cables, dvd/rw drives, gpu's, an OS etc, etc, etc. I think I can live with that as my main cruncher and machine for a while to come. Of course a dual core pc will have to come off line and the machine this one is replacing, the one I am typing this on and is a quad core will become a Boinc only machine.

Keith I hope you have LOTS of fun on vacation and don't even think once about your pc's that will be patiently waiting for you to return! I think when those things roar back to life you will be putting out enough credits that the whole World will see the lights dim!!!

SwiftMallard and JohnC try getting some MW units right now, I have been getting units since early this morning and as I return a unit I get another one, my RAC is screaming!!! It is now 2PM my time and they have been coming non stop since about 6:30AM!!

@Mikey,

That's a mighty fine cpu listed there. Unfortunately, those are listed as In-Store only items and my local M-C is out-of-stock. The memory IS available and I had thought about picking some up. Have to clear that with the Boss though.

@Keith,

Hang in there. The dust will settle eventually and the water blocks will start chillin like they're suppose to.

I KNEW it was too good to be true, okay I am off to look and see if they are in NoVa! I new it...the motherboard is out of stock, so I ordered this one instead:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0367299

Yes I ordered the parts and will pick them up tomorrow, @ $375 total. Should keep me busy for a few days at least! When I get there I will talk to the sales guy and see if I made good choices, it not I can always decline part of my order..get a different MB for example.

Being blown away by gale force winds (~60mph) and lots of rain, but I'll hang on by my finger nails foa win(d) until I am ...

That is similar to what Randy and Swiftmallard are sending me today except mine will come with temps in the 30'sF!!! Keith if it comes your way you won't like it either!!!

I got an email from MicroCenter last night, the motherboard I ordered is not in stock either!! That saved me $150 but now means the chip and memory are useless!! I may keep the memory and ditch the cpu if they don't have a MB that will work, prices only go down from here on the X6, at least I think that is what will happen!

Too late, it's here.

I don't mind except I had to close the windows, only leave the one by the computers cracked very little. The cold leaks in very easily, but the computer heat melts it away quickly.

I'm tired, going home now. The 1st is no fun as there are lots of reports, and then the 1st of the year a lot of things need resetting, or new folders, new scripts. its a mess.

Sales are good though. For day 1 of the year I had 17% of last years month average. That is even good for a week-end and even better for a holiday.

Yawn.

Just wait until the rest of the cold air comes in...your walk in sales should plummet!! Who thinks marine stuff when it is 35F outside?!!! Right now for me it is 13F outside....RandyC I give, that is enough!!!!!! It actually SNOWED yesterday here, not enough to stick on the ground but enough to make me cold!!!

RandyC I bought a different MB, I got an ASRock for $160:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0373375 The guy at the store said Asus make ASRock mb's and they are very similar and just work. They also sold me different memory than what I had selected, they sold me two 4gb sticks of DDR3-1066 memory for $30 bucks so I bought two of them for a total of 16gb of ram! It will take me a few days to get it up and running as I will be parting out two other machines to do it, then putting one of those two back together as a Boinc only box. I am thinking of putting dual AMD 5770's in the machine as opposed to a single AMD 5870, it will be easier to do that then involve a 3rd machine that also has dual pci-e slots.

Alright...warming trend on the way!

I guess the 16GB will be good as long as the MB supports it. I see it has 4 memory slots, so maybe...

WINNING!!!

Gee thanks Mikey, it was 27F here this morning. On the good side, our average winter is 4 days below freezeing, so we've used 1 up.

Darn it it is too late, the machine is up and running and is F-A-S-T!!! It is 64bit Win7 Ultimate and has 16gb of ram. On the positive side I did get the 2 year extended warranty for only 20 dollars.

Keith it is up to 32F at my place right now but supposed to be in the mid 50's come Friday! And I will see if I can blow real hard and send some more cold days your way this year, maybe you can use towards next years batch?

Oh, i got you beat, we made it to 34F here.

Don't worry, i'll fight back as I have lots of Chilli fixings and beans.

Good news, Two of my brothers will be joing me this year at dad's. The third we don't know. Anyway one brother will end up meating me in Charlotte and then we have the same flight from there to Melbourne. Hope we can sit together, but it would be funny if the assigned seats ended up next to each other. I don't know his seat mumber, but i liek to pick my own. All four of my flights i'm in 16F. Makes it easier on me to always locate the same spot. The other brother arrives on a different airline.

Since noone else declared themselves win ning, it looks like I still am.

Hey Mikey, I'm WINNING. why ?

I just was checking some numbers from some statements against my preliminary tax return and noticed, that the $160 I thought I owed was actually OVERPAYMENT, I get a REFUND. Like I said before sometimes I owe a little, sometimes not. This year is a not year. Most likely when i do the final i'll get back even more than that, but not much.

Woohoo ! ! ! Goes toward that airline ticket.

Next up I got my annual auto inspection done earlier today, passed and nothing else needed fixing. Double WINNING. Which also if you remember last year I had Nitrogenized my tires, they said they looked good and did not need any topping off. Hadn't touched them since it was put in, no leaks, no pressure loss. Tripple WINNING.

Found another feature on my HDTV.

I told you if I turn the TV off, it tells the connected blu-ray to turn off too. Convientent when in bed as it is only one button on one remote to push.

Well usually i turn the tv on first, then the blu-ray. This morning for some reason in the dark i guess, i grabbed the blu-ray remote first, so i turned it on. the dvd loaded and then the tv woke up by itself and had video from the blu-ray.

Now I wonder what else these two mischievious electronic gadgets talk about when i'm not looking ?

Today is 57F.

Now to go get breakfast and after that start a batch of krock-pot chili.

I LOVE chili, it is supposed to be in the mid 50's all week for me or I would be making a batch too, I like it better when it is cooler outside. I also make chili-mac with chili and noodles, but NOT spaghetti noodles, I prefer elbows, or screw noodles(the twisty ones) or even shells are good too. I want to eat my chili with a spoon not a knife and fork!

I have been looking on line at MicroCenter and it looks like everything I bought is now sold out! That means that either I buy elsewhere or have to wait a little bit to spend the new money I got. I am testing one of my dual cores with my new watt meter and it is using @215 watts while crunching with an AMD 5770, that is only about 85 watts less than my new X6! I think i have some very inefficient crunchers!!! I am also trying to out wait WCG to see which gpu their new gpu app will support, I do not have any Nvidia gpu's running right now. Mine were too old and slow so they got replaced by faster ones.

And Randy YES you are winning the first post of the week contest but unfortunately that is not the point of this game, sorry!
So for right now I am WINNING!!!

Yes but why is Chili hot, should it be called anti-chili ?

Got home today and checking the twins, notice one was doa. Reboot to get "disk read error". Oh, loverly. So i powered off, jiggled the sata cables, didn't even unplug them and power on and it was ok. Checking boinc I see it has been dead for 6 days at least as one wu has a deadline that many days ago. I din't know if work wasn't finished by the deadline, that it was a literal deadline and your computer dies. Some projects are pretty strict in thier rules.

Oh well, time for some anti-chili and garlic toast with rainbow chip kupkakes with chocolate frosting for desert

Oh I do not make mine spicy anymore either, I don't like the spicy out part!

As for shutting down the pc I do not think Boinc can do that right now, and I would the other projects would be pretty mad at Dr. A if he even suggested something like that.

Randy remember that new pc I made the AMD X6? Well I was talking to my wife about the amount of wattage used by it and some of my older dual core pc's and guess what she asked me....she wants to know if I will shut down TWO pc's for every X6 I build!! I have the money to build another one just like the first one and was kind of bragging how by shutting down an old dual core it was actually going to save us some money, and next thing you know she wants to shut down MORE pc's!! I of course told her NO but today I put in a 2nd gpu in the new pc, along with a 2nd hard drive. Both of those had been planned all along, I just finally did them getting ready to replace the pc I am typing this on. This pc is NOT going away, it is a quad core with one of my 5870 gpu's in it, but it is in an old E-Machine case and the front USB ports don't work anymore so it is time for me to swap to a new box and make this one a Boinc only machine.

Tiger that is a nice concrete home you have there! A little small by US standards but nice!

Naw I am WINNING!!!
Randy I JUST bought the new system parts! I bought an AMD X6 Bulldozer FX 6100 3.3ghz cpu and an Asus M5A99X EVO motherboard AND 16gb of ram to go along with it! Total was just under $400.00 which is well within my price range. The cpu and mb will be here in less than a week the memory could be until the end of the month. Apparently there is a run on the memory as it is $30.00 for 8gb of Kingston ddr3-1333 ram, that's two 4gb sticks for 30 bucks! I also bought TWO lifetime licenses for MalwareBytes Pro, that should keep the bugs away!! I am using the Free version now but the Pro scans and updates automatically, my wife is not very good at making choices on what is good and what is not, neither is my son!!! They both use my pc's and therefore they need full-time protecting.

Swiftmallard the MW units are flowing again!!! I suspended my Moo on those machines to take full advantage of it!

Told you I was WINNING!!!

Well, there's a good possibility I'm going to be putting out the big $$$ fairly soon. I'm seriously investigating this, along with a couple of upgrades to make it my daily commuter. With upgraded batteries and the ability to plug-in at w@^k, I just might wind up with the EV I've been wanting since the early 70s. I'm budgeting about $8K for the project, including purchase, transportation, and upgrades.

Needs a lot of investigating/planning, but I just might pull it off, and that makes me...

WINNING!!!

WINNING!!!

How fast can your car crunch this WU's?

Today's gonna be a bummer. Starts out decent @40F, but a little rain coming down. By this afternoon, the temps start to plummet and the rain will turn to sn*w. tomorrow's commute will be the pits.

But for now I am...

I think Keith must be enjoying it too though, I saw where he is gets lots of rain and maybe he will now get some cold air to go with it!! He needs some more variety in his weather, seeing too many bikinis all the time is not a good thing!!! His heart you know....

As for shutting down the pc I do not think Boinc can do that right now, and I would the other projects would be pretty mad at Dr. A if he even suggested something like that.

That was a joke, ya know the deadline passed and my computer died, as in dead.

Yes he is, isn't he?

I've tentatively scheduled an EV inspection trip for weekend of Jan 21-22. If all goes well, I'll be hauling the most expensive boat anchor I've ever bought back to Michigan. Then I'll proceed to make the movie The Money Pit look like child's play while I upgrade battery packs and stuff. Cost overruns may balloon budget to $10K.

WINNING?!!!

Sorry to hear that Randy, but there will be another option soon just keep looking! I have always thought of going propane in a small pickup truck...there is plenty of room in the bed for the tank and there is minimal changes needed. in fact you can even keep the gas tank and only use it when you run out of propane! And propane is CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP!!! I get mine, for my grill, at the local State Park.

Good to see some new faces to keep Mikey company.

I've been busy planning the unplanned family reunion. At first it was just my annual vacation which I use the time to visit, well now just my dad. Got one brother plus one brothers with his girlfriend and maybe a niece with my third brother. I've been the message hub so i've jsut sent out to all the latest plans for everyone.

Randy, please keep any s**w until late February. Mikey, don't blow any kold air my way, blow it back toward Randy.

In 30 years the four brothers have only gotten together once, and longer since all of us were with dad at the same time. Dad is 90.5 now.

Gotta run, computers need repair today.

Are we WINNING yet ?

I've got about 1 1/2 inches of dusting on the driveway...starting Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.

Come tomorrow morning, I think I'm going to be able to crank up the sn*wblower that I bought last year and be justified using it.

John send me your address and an account where I can charge the shipping and I will send you some old 10 and 20 MEG hard drives you can use! I have a STACK of useless drive that Windows won't even recognize anymore that I need to drive a whole or two in and dump them.

Keith I HOPE all goes well for the visit South!!!!!
Keep working on those pc's it is a shame to have all that crunching power and not be crunching!!! And I thought you wanted the cold air to keep the pc's cool? My basement is into the low 70's F right now, that is the coldest it has been in MANY years!! It is in the 20's F outside though, and yes the window is open and the fans are blowing!!

Swiftmallard and Randy if you guys can KEEP the SNOW all to yourself this year I would be just fine, don't feel like you have to share guys!!!

@Mikey

It's just as well, I really need to clear the decks on my debt.
Way back in the late '70s I tried a test convert of a Datsun 1200 to propane. I bought a small cylinder of the propane they use in gas torches, hooked that to a hose I spliced into the gas line and did a test drive.

Results: in a short drive around the apartment complex parking lot, the hose was frosted over and brittle--could crack with any vibration. I was actually trying to gun it, but it never exceeded idle speed...and it wanted to backfire every 5 seconds.

Conclusion: MY DIY propane conversion was a BAD idea.[/edit]

And i'm still walking around in shorts.

Ok outside max time is about 3 minutes, but i can at least walk to the mailbox and back. Msut drive the neighbors crazy when they are out in thier havy coast and long pants.

It seems with so many computers, i absorb heat and have extra to burn off.

Speaking of that, I've fianlly got one LCS installed and running. But at the moment I'm still testing it on low heat, so the gpus and cpu are not running boinc yet. Unfortunatelly too i ahve to throttle down the other still air cooled unit, so there will not be excess heat flowing out of it into the other system. I plan to run some test during the week, to make sure all is operating properly before going to full heat power. Then i think too conversion of the other unit will fianlly begin. This 3 day project is now on day 48. Also since unit 2 has been offline for about 40 days, i've got many updates to catch up on. I just love computers (NOT!).

Mikey, looks like my niece is definately going to be at the reunion and bring her dad along. He's the one brother that has been having down on his luck situations the last few years, so probally the only way he will get there is if she drags him with her. But as of now it seems to be a go for what is left of my immediate family (not counting girlfirends, nephews and nieces and such) to be all together.

I might be WINNING, let me check my mirror and see if anybody is behind me.

Got another dusting of snow today. It's supposed to warm up above freeing tomorrow then cool off again for the rest of the week.

I've got about 1 1/2 inches of dusting on the driveway...starting Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.

Come tomorrow morning, I think I'm going to be able to crank up the sn*wblower that I bought last year and be justified using it.

WINNING?!!!

I know what you mean with the shorts..we went to breakfast at the Cracker Barrel yesterday and all I wore was my shirt, no jacket. It was 22F outside and everyone was giving me heck for it, I said 'I go from my house to my car which is heated, then I go from the car to the restaurant which is also heated, then I do the opposite on the return home trip, what's the problem?'!! The other folks were all bundled up so much we almost needed another table just for all their coats, scarves, gloves, hats, etc, etc!!! Now it WAS chilly but I have been much colder for MUCH longer, so I know a few minutes outside isn't going to kill me!!!

As for WINNING...it is ME!!!!!

I remember when I was in Virginia Beach one winter when I was in the Navy. When the temps got down into the 30s F, the guys from Florida where going around in their down jackets. The guys from Minnesota put on a sweatshirt.

After I bought my tablet I had to upgrade my router at home to wireless. And I was allowed to connect to the network at w@^k as well. But the tablet is missing one little piece: ability to connect to a proxy server. It seems that the tablet I bought doesn't support proxy servers in native mode. I can do something called 'rooting' to it, but the IS folks in their wisdom told me in no certain terms that if I did, they would ban its MAC address from the network. How they would know it was 'rooted' I have no idea, but I'm not taking any chances losing access there.

So I can access the 'intranet' with the tablet, but I can't get through the firewall to the Internet. At home, I can do what I please, of course. I use a different type of wifi protocol at home so I connect direct to the router.

BE CAREFUL Keith, you don't any old hacker with a wireless device to be able to hack into your systems! You might think about keeping the business pc's wired and adding a wireless setup that gets customers and others to the internet but not into your business side. Some newer routers have a 'guest' provision built into them.

No worries there, i've already considered that. I will route it through our firebox, which has two sepearate channels. One can't connect to the other. Also the wireless has two zones, one for us and some work computer not on the domain which will be secured and one for guests, probally also secured but i can give in house guests the password. The two zones can't see each other. I may use mine at work for some of my internet sales stuff, gives me an extra screen. Also maybe stuff like storing pdf price lists as it would be easy to call them up.

for Randy,
I said I got an iPad, I didn't say I bought one.

Today I got a magnetic cover, when you flip it up, it turns on the gizmo, when you cover it up it auto shuts off.

Last night I played some game, build your army and take over the others. Played about an hour with sound and only used 2% if that of the battery life.

Good for you! But some people have to pay for their toys...

I'm not sure I would take an iPad if you GAVE it to me.

Randy was post #200 and that was the winning post number this time.
Randy you know what to do next!

Thank you, thank you, thank you very much!

I would like to acknowledge all the little people who helped contribute to this honor, but I seem to be overlooking them for some reason right now.

New game starts shortly...I mean, in a not so very long time from now.
