I like this milestone -> Pending credit: 2,157.54.

It use to hover between 700 and 1000, but now with the longer wu's, some people not reporting them back and a delay in generating and sending replacements my pending has grown substantially.

Live long and BOINC.

Heya Gassy...got you beat...2,250.62...I've got a small cache of Malaria so the WU's are fresh and have to wait for validation. If you have a large cache you tend to have a smaller pending.

Oh, Oh. Big brother is watching me :D
I'll step down after end of this week. At the Moment the maschines run 2/3 MaraliaControl and 1/3 Rossetta .. The 2/3 push was only to speedup my team, now i'm not sure what i should do. Switchback to Rosetta is bad since i read here that there are many cheaters :(

Man, that's impressive!

I try to do more.. but today the most is landing in the pendings, perhaps tomorrow i get more. Today the Pendings grow from 3300 to 6700. I wish to break the 10k/day limit :)

I have used so many different email addresses for boinc that I'm not sure of my 'combined total' across all projects. I do know it's greater than >200k but I am not really concerned with that.

Will be hitting 15k work units for malaria today. RAC would be at 600 if I didn't have to shutdown boinc for 3-4 hours a day to run math/stat programs but oh well - I also don't much care about RAC as the only reason I choose a project is for the projet - my ego doesn't need much satisfying.

I wish to break the 10k/day limit :)

Your killing us (in more ways than one)!

Sorry, i can't stop :)
But it's not the first time i mobilize in a short time some power. At Chessbrain i kick down the servers by adding 100 PC at one night.

Btw. i do only 11.5k Credits this night, and the server say
"Results received within 24 hours 11,420"
A Result is 12.2 Credits in average. In this case i only done 1/12 of the WU of the days. You can burn with the other 11/12 :)

But i have a really big problem .. i can't run malaria longer as to the end of this week. The Client made too many traffic over the internal LAN. With Rosetta or other projects i can run the Client COMPLETTLY over the LAN. (Boinc Client and WU on a server share). All i save on local disk is after a reboot "resetet" to default. :)

Be happy, your time come back soon :] And i hope, i didn't kill you, i only want a lil'bit shoking and help my team to enter the top10.

Have you considered setting your work cache to several days and forbidding the client to contact malaria control's server? If you did perhaps you could upload the work @ home, wirelessly at some cafe (or outside some cafe) etc. It's generally an inconvenience but I do know of some boinc users who do such things - of course dialup users tend to use it all the time.

You must have rather strict traffic quotas; I routinely use up to a terrabyte of traffic/month (although the traffic is unlimited - I just don't have a need to go beyond that).

Sorry, but you understand completly wrong. Did you really read my post? :)
I don't talk about interNET - limitation :) I talk about the limitation of a in house lan, and that i can't run malaria "diskless", like other boinc projects.

But this isn't the right place to talk about this longer. This is a milestone thread :)
If you like to 'talk' about my diskless-traffic-problem, we can write in the "Swissteam" thread or you open a new one.

More milestone-like: Now i have stop'ed the Malaria-Client on over 80 PC. Most of this run now rosetta again.

I set a goal to make MC.N be my number one project when I started alpha here while continuing to krunch a little for other projects.

My highest project was CP.N with 429,118.90 credits.

Just a few moments ago my MC.N credits reached 429,529.91. Woo-Hoo !

Today is Halloween (USA), so I got a treat and not a trick.

This is all within 1 year, I'm only 10 days away from being here 1 year.

I just passed 500,000 on MC.N which is now my highest ranking project.

I guess I would have to call this 1/2 a Milestone (as in 1/2 a Million).

It only took me almost 13 months to reach this.

Lets see if I can make up the other 1/2 in less time, so this is my next goal.

I just realised that my 3.0GHz oc'd to 3.4GHz (P4 Socket 478) machine has clocked over the 100k cobblers. 23k on XP and 86k on Linux Fedora Core 5. This makes it the single highest computer for total credit on Malaria Control. Woohoo!

Live long and BOINC.

Congrats, that's quite a commitment for a single System (gotta love HT / Dual Cores :) )

For me it'll be a while, sharing power to mostly 2 Projects among Systems.

That\'s a Pentium D Extreme Edition, right? 2 cores + HT enabled = 4 virtual cpu\'s. 500 RAC is probably not so bad for that machine. EE will overclock, but Pentium D\'s do tend to get hot.

No way! 500+ RAC for that host rocks!

Yes I have a pc that also is doing around 500+ RAC but has twice as many cores as yours, hmmmm? I will have to do some tweaking or something.

That\'s a Pentium D Extreme Edition, right? 2 cores + HT enabled = 4 virtual cpu\'s. 500 RAC is probably not so bad for that machine. EE will overclock, but Pentium D\'s do tend to get hot.

Yes it is a 3.2ghz, P4D EE, 4 cores. Did you say it can get hot????? It is running at 78c or 178F right now! It runs 24/7 but does sit next to the a/c vent and I do have a Zalman cooler on it. It is my main machine so does a few other things, like all my internet work etc. I run Kaspersky Internet Suite on it. I also have a P4D 3.4ghz that is getting a RAC of about 487 right now. It also runs 24/7 but does nothing else. I am hoping the 4 cpu machine will come up a bit more. I just enabled the 2nd core on another machine, a P4D 2.66ghz machine. I was waiting until I bought some more fans. The cpu fan was okay for one core but I wanted some case fans before I enabled the 2nd core for Boinc. It is at 205 RAC and growing steadily.
I almost forgot...I only have my pc\'s running at 90% in the settings for how cpu to use when idle and 50% when busy. I may have to increase that, that may be the problem, I use my pc too much!

Thank you, but do not get worried, I am on a mission, to be #1 in my Team and to be as highly ranked overall as possible. I am in a position to be able to have more pc\'s than I can use at the moment. I have 4 sitting on a shelf not running, they are somewhat slower than the main ones I am running. Most of the off-line ones are Celerons and in the 1.x ghz range in speed. I just can\'t run more than about 20 or so without causing problems. I do not have a Server, although one of my pc\'s is named that. I am/was Beta Testing MS\'s Windows Home Server software and it is based on Windows 2003 Server. I had some \'issues\' with it and have taken it off my pc for now. I also fix peoples computers as a help to them. They often give me their old parts in payment, sometimes this means the old pc. In fact I donated, locally, a 733mhz pc just yesterday. Cpu, 17\" crt monitor, keyboard, mouse and cables all went out the door for no charge! I even included the original disks.

It\'s a shame your RAC is dropping, it\'s going to take a little longer for you to overtake me.....

I agree very impressive, congratualtions!
Gas dude, it will be nip and tuck on who gets there first. It may be you, you ARE closer, but my RAC is quite a bit higher, so while I am climbing faster you ARE still climbing. I may have to put a couple more on just to climb faster. I DO have a couple of things I am going to try...I bought 2 new pc\'s a few weeks ago and immediately changed the cpu in one of them. The new pc is now a dual core 2.66ghz. I took out a 3.4 Celeron with an L2 cache of 512k. I have a couple of machine that have a very small L2 cache that it may fit in and I am going to try that soon. My son has the 2nd pc, the 1st is running here, and will be home today for me to add memory and swap the cpu. That gives me a 2nd cpu to swap out another Celeron with a low L2 cache. Both of those changes SHOULD make me climb a bit faster. NewEgg.com sells P4 D805 dual core 2.66 cpus for about $50.00, I MAY go that route instead but will definately at least try the straight swap first.

mikey, newegg has quad cores going for US$299.99.....once you take into account the computer footprint, power usage and cost, it is hard to go passed that deal!

Look at the 6th line on the above link for your highest position, which in your case is your current place.

Then look here for your host stats and click on an individual hosts detail page (the little graph icon) for the same info.

I am now over the 500,000 mark and steadily climbing! I did take one pc off line, but should replace it with a newer faster one in a few days. Hopefully I will do it with my other Linux machine too. They were experiments with old slow chips and they work fine. However the Operator, me, has no idea how to do some things in Linux, so the remaining one will probably go by the wayside soon.

Thank you!!!! And don\'t worry too much about being passed, I am currently 7th in RAC for the whole Project. All those with higher RAC\'s that I do have more credits than I do, everyone else will be passed, eventually. Today, tomorrow all the same in the end. We are crunching for something that can make a difference in someones LIFE! AND the people here seem to be actually analyzing our results, something my last project did not, and still does not, do!

I\'ve passed the 3M marker, overall, since starting back in 2004.

(At time of posting my banner is not quite showing this do to the time between when I earn credits and the time boincstats updates).

and

I\'m close to getting 1M in a single project.

Posted 30.Nov.2006
I just passed 500,000 on MC.N which is now my highest ranking project.

I guess I would have to call this 1/2 a Milestone (as in 1/2 a Million).

It only took me almost 13 months to reach this.

Lets see if I can make up the other 1/2 in less time, so this is my next goal.

So now I\'m nearing the 1M marker. Only 9 months later. So I doubled my MC.N credit in less time, and I do not even have all my hosts running, some have been turned off for the summer.

Awesome job KK!

I just broke 100,000 here at Malaria Control.

And I just broke into the top 200 in total cross-project points. Currently #199!

That\'s okay, the whole point is to make crunching worthwhile! My old project is STILL not analyzing the data crunched and I did almost 3.5 MILLION cobblestones for them alone! I also crunched a ton of units under their system prior to Boinc. That is just pathetic, IMO, and that is why I am here now!

@mikey : Keep climbing up the ladder :o)

...I now made it 3 Million, which is the good news :)

...the bad news is, that I\'ll have to stop the serious crunching for several months now, so it\'ll likely be my last milestone for quite some time to come (soon losing my 3rd place overall I bet).

But when I return, I\'ll be sure to pack some more power and see how it goes from there :)

No problems yet, I did have to turn off my sons new laptop, he took it to college, but did turn on one of my new 3.46ghz Celeron machines. I still have one more of those to go. I have already set my last Linux machine to get no new tasks for that changeover. It will come back as a Windows machine.

Why the bad news FalconFly? What\'s going to make you stop serious crunching?

Let\'s just say the job sends me to places far away from home ;)

Less than 22 days !

Not really a Milestone, but ...

Just the time needed by this host 50704
to reach rank #1 in top computers.

As of now :
Created 17 Aug 2007 22:13:20 UTC
Total Credit 36,648.31
Recent average credit 1,579.49

My goals are :

  • to keep it 100% on MalariaControl for a few more weeks (final stabilized RAC probably over 1750) before sharing its power with other projects.
  • to see it overpassed by (as many as possible) other hosts very soon ;)

Happy crunching to all !

Thanks, I sent Spit a small \'sorry\' note and I hope she understands. it is nothing personal, just part of the way I crunch. I tend to put all my computers on one project and since my wife likes digital cameras, I get to keep my computers crunching. If/when I see her again, I met her at Teammate Jack\'s near DC a couple of years ago now, I will buy her dinner!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Everyone is a \"peep\", I use it as short for people.
Without some to lead everyone would be number one, without a bunch of us we would have no Teams and be just individuals. We at Team TFFE are all needed and very much appreciated by all of us!

Thank you very much. I have 2 more machines, actually I will be upgrading 2 more machines to dual core from single core shortly, so I should be climbing a bit faster here shortly. I have found a problem with the fact that I have no actual Windows server and the total number of pc\'s going over about 21. Things don\'t like talking to each other at that point. My wife doesn\'t like the electric bill either, so going to dual cores from older single cores may make here a bit happier. At least that is what I am telling her anyway.

Thanks.

I forgot to mention, a large portion of that went into MalariaControl.net which is still my top project, at least for my Windows hosts.
My PS3 contributes some to that total.
Unfortunately there is no PS3 application here.

---

Not to turn this into a team boasting thread, but I was just reviewing my teams total for the year. We went from 58M to 121M, a gain of 62M, more than doubling our total in the year. It took our team 3 years to earn the prior credit. That certainly is a great achievement.

---

Happy New Year 2008 to all.

Just hit the 5,000 mark.

Using one box working on 14 projects simultaneously all with equal resource share.

Thanks, a group of us got together and decided to do this for Dennis. You are welcome to join us, we are crunching for Dennis until the end of February. And then most of us will return to our regular Teams. Dennis was a member of The Final Front Ear(TFFE) Team when he died. This new Team lets lots of people from many Teams join us in a tribute without making them join TFFE.

THANK YOU!!! Dennis would be embarrassed by all the things being done in his honor, but as he often said \"tough\"! He was the kind of friend that didn\'t ask anything in return, just gave what he could, whenever he could. He was a true friend and is being missed, but not forgotten!

We ALL started small and some of us have worked up to a larger share. EVERY bit counts, who knows YOU could be crunching the unit that finds the cure! I could be crunching it, we ALL contribute what we can. Because if we don\'t try, nothing will be found!

I am back to #10 in overall credits! Chris had some power \'issues\', seems the power company thought it was cool to just shut whole areas of the Country off at times. Me I had some ailing machines, still have one, but seems I got my problems fixed first and I am now back ahead of Chris and hopefully solidly into the TOP TEN, to stay this time.

And unfortunately my main pc was giving me troubles, AGAIN. I seem to have sorted it out, VERY dusty and stuck case fan, yes they were related. But all seems to be okay now and it is coming back like gangbusters! I used my can of air and blew out the sut and used some CRC powerlube on the fan and all is working again. I even upgraded the BIOS. It is an ASUS mb and they do it thru Windows over the net. Smooth as silk on the 2 machines I have done so far and I like it! The upgrade will let me upgrade the cpu to a quad core in the future. I have 9 ASUS based machines running now and may just upgrade them all. Slowly though, don\'t want to upset the applecart since the machines are crunching fine.

Anyway all this is leading to......you Chris are now back to #10 overall, CONGRATULATIONS, and I am back to #11, boo, hiss. As you said the battle is not over, I am trying to come back and if those darn Linux machines would just pick up some of the slack they did as Windows machines everything would be cool here, figuretively speaking of course.

I am trying as hard as I can right now!!! My main machine picked up about 40 or so RAC just today. It should almost 200 left to go, to get back to normal. I may need to bring another machine on line I do have several sitting around doing nothing. They used to crunch for Seti just fine, back in the day. They are off line now because they are slower than the ones that are on line. AND I did not have a Server to keep all those IP addresses straight, now I do have a Server. HMMMMM :)))

I have recently scored 1M in my third project and will be at 5M overall before the end of the month. Not bad for almost 4 years of work. I started in April 10th 2004, 2 more days to go.

1st - MalariaControl.net
2nd - ClimatePrediction combined (CPdN + CPdN beta + BBC + Seasonal)
3rd - PS3GRID (took 10.5 months for one PS3 to reach this mark)

+1,000,000

I am happy to reach today the target I was aiming at since September : simultaneously hit 1 million credits at both MCDN and CPDN, starting from about 200k and 600k respectively !
Both projects will now sail together.

I have already enlarged \"User credits\" column size in BoincView.

Glad to join the Seven Digits Club :-)

Hi Chris,
Many thanks for your interest in the maths :)
I am not in a hurry, but considering the increase in the computation power of the average computer during the last years, we should expect a standard RAC of 10,000 per computer before 2012, and therefore my _almost_ 40 millions well before this far date...
And overall, I hope that projects like malariacontrol will have by then reached their goal.
Keep crunching.

Hi TGG,
Dont worry, it's not so smart ;)
3,628,800 is the result of 1x2x3x4x5x6x7x8x9x10 (named "factorial 10").
So the next milestone - in that sequence - would be factorial 11, ie 1x2x3x...x10x11 giving 39,916,800 !!!

So... keep crunching :)

MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS to BOTH of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 2nd million is much easier than the 1st though, faster machines make credits accumulate faster.

8/9/2008 MalariaControl 2,750,000

WOOHOO!!!
I am sorry to say though that my next milestone will take a bit longer to reach. The Admins said they are closing the Project to new users later this month because "We expect that our need for computing power to slightly decrease towards the end of the year. This is because many of the large number of models that are currently fitted to data are getting closer to convergence, and at this moment we don’t have more models in the pipeline waiting to be fitted. For that reason, we will close account creation later this month."
source https://malariacontrol.net/forum_thread.php?id=758&nowrap=true#7388

In response I have set my dual core crunchers to No New Tasks and am in the process of finding a new Project for them. I do not wish to crunch for someplace that can't use my time, nor for someplace that doesn't analyze the results, like the last place I was crunching for. I have set one computer already to ABC@Home and have been looking at other projects. I am NOT leaving Malaria, I am just spreading myself out a bit more.

I wouldn't go that far mikey!

It still sounds like they can use all the current users and they will be analysing the results! I doubt they will go the SETI route and just crunch data for the hell of it. Why else would they be closing account creation?

Live long and BOINC!

No I do not believe they are going the Seti route, I read that they are closing account creation because they don't want to run out of work for those that are staying. I quoted above "and at this moment we don’t have more models in the pipeline waiting to be fitted". To me that means...we have no new ideas right now and therefore may refine the old ones a bit, but basically we are at a standstill right now. And to protect those users that have hung in with us we will stop account creation so no one just crunches for the heck of it, like at Seti. These are MY words, except those enclosed in quotes, and MY interpretation of their words.

I am glad I got in when I did then.

At least I will achieve the first 100,00, and that gives me a chance to head for the first 1 million. About another 7 months I estimate.

I really do hope that the people in charge come up with new ideas and more models to work on, this seems to be a very worthwhile Project and they have said in the past that the way Malaria is treated has changed because of our crunching! I can't think of a better Project that that, we crunch, treatment options improve and people stop dying!!! Now on CBS's 60 minutes a month or two ago there was a lady that has already won a Nobel Prize that is turning her attention to finding a cure for Malaria. She is VERY well respected in the field of research and is going about it thru the DNA. She said she would find the cure within a couple of years, we can only hope, but will keep at it until she does. She has already found the cure for another disease, I don't remember which, and has been working on the cure for Malaria for a couple of years now. They portrayed her as some sort of savior of the human race, as far as disease eradication goes. Of course I cannot find a link to the article right now!!

Hi Mikey,

I'm surprised that you don't crunch for World Community Grid. They have quite a few projects running that could use your CPU power and it would be nice to be in a project where I have more credits that you! Try 'em out: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

World Community Grid is a BOINC ready project. They used to run their own client called "UD" but that's been on the way out now for quite some time. All their projects can now be crunched by BOINC.

I see that now, I had a very high electric bill last month, over $500.00 JUST for electricity, and must cut back a little. BUT I will research WCG and perhaps attach to one or more of its Projects when I turn the pc's back on. I am NOT turning them all off, just some to cut back a little.

I live in a neighborhood where that is just not a viable solution. I turned 5 machines off yesterday and it 'seems' cooler in the basement. I will probably leave them off for awhile and check next months bill.

There again, Mikey, you do have a ranch to produce the cruncher output! No wonder the power feed bill is steep!

Maybe you should leave the extra 5 off until winter, then you can use the CPU heat to warm the house.

Open the sides of all the rigs and have a large ducted fan blowing the heat via underfloor ducts.

No heating bills, and the computers are useful after all.

About as easy as putting solar on the roof. No I am just going to suffer thru until it starts to get chilly and then I will bring them back online. I did buy a small air compressor to blow the dust out of them, hopefully that will help a little when they come back online.

I did the same for my rigs. 9 bar air is a good way to knock out the dust bunnies, but outside where the dust can go where it wants.

I'm still crunching here, some but a long way to go.

I've had to sacrifice a few CPU cores to run my NVIDIA GPU's so my RAC here has dropped a little.

So today's milestone is my second PS3 is now working on it's 100th task for PS3GRID, plus some yoyo too but I haven't added that one up yet. Doesn't sound like much but tasks take 23ish hours. It has a flawless record with 8,173,550.41 seconds on PS3GRID.

The turn out (average of all work credited)
PS3 147.37cs per hour
PS3 150.10cs per hour
GPU 129.14cs per hour
GPU 122.93cs per hour
GPU 121.39cs per hour

Average per CPU of all my CPU's on MC.N = 23.28cs per hour

I've measured the PS3 as drawing 182W and figured it costs $12per month to run, not counting additional for extra a/c in hot months, but I do not run heat as much in cooler months so they save there.

That is a whole lot of cs's per hour when compared to cpu processing!
It also looks like you will crunch with any pc, how slow is your slowest pc, in ghz? I will put a P3 500mhz one on the curb in the morning.

Congratulations there, Mikey

I am now heading for 200K on Malaria and 1 million on BOINC combined.

The last time I looked at BOINC combined it is 10K higher than shown below. That was today.

Here's an important milestone for a project and for BOINC.

LHC@home started back in 2004.

I am proud to have contributed since the beginning and help make this happen.

For those that don't follow LHC@home, here's some news.

Switch on itself went brilliantly and this was a direct result of LHC@home. If you had not been crunching data there is a good chance that the two beams would not have been circulated that quickly and they could have spent ages just getting beam thorugh one sector. We are still waiting on collisions, there was a chance that we'd see them yesterday but looks like it is next week now. There is still plenty of work needed on the magnets as they ramp up to full luminosity so there will be plenty of SixTrack work from CERN. Fingers crossed, and yes I know I keep saying this but scientists can work slowly, meticulously, but slowly we will have some more apps running.

Just wanted to let everyone know I have upgraded one of my AMD x2 5600+ machines to an AMD x4 9850 quad core machine! It is doing units in under 60 minutes, 4 at a time!!!! This machines output should be about doubled!! I upgraded the BIOS, it is an ASUS board and you can do it thru Windows now, bought the cpu for $150.00 and the 2 new memory chips for $62.00. The cpu was on sale the memory was not. Of course I have since found the memory on sale at a different store, NO I am not going thru the process to change to the cheaper stuff. I told Boinc to get no new units, finished the oens I had, detached and shutdown the pc. I took out the old memory, took out the old cpu and fan. I put in the new cpu and fan, I did put a drop of Artic Silver on it, and then added the memory and powered it up. I went into the BIOS and checked the settings and turned off AMD Virtualization, this is NOT a server and I do not currently do virtual computing. I also turned off AMD's cool and quiet and then booted right into the existing Windows. ALL 4 cores were found and I told Boinc to reconnect to Malaria. A TON of new units were downloaded and the pc is now happily crunching along nicely!!! I thought I might have to reinstall Windows, it is a Boinc only machine so not a big deal but I was ready none the less. Overall it took about 30 minutes to do the swap. I do build computers, for a hobby, so have done cpu swaps, motherboard changes, etc, etc, etc MANY times before. The cpu temp is currently 25C or 77F on the stock fan that came with the cpu. The side IS off and will remain so.
I do intend to buy another motherboard and put the 5600 on it, I just wanted to start using the quad core NOW! New toys and all you know.

Nice upgrade there, Mikey, and one I'd like to keep an eye on. In a month, or so, it would be nice to compare it with my Intel Quad here.

Thanks Mikey. Had most of my machines over at the PrimeGrid challenge, so I kinda crept over the 7-figure barrier. Should get the RAC back into the 4,000-5,000 range soon. So, is this a Champagne and Caviar club or more of a beer and nuts crowd? :)

These are all important milestones for today:

My first PS3 has processed it's 500th task (task take 23 hours).

I'm one month short of krunchin' for this project for 3 Years.

I'm having my second glass of Kahlua and milk.

No PS2's. They cannot be loaded with linux.

The PS3 has a the capability to run linux, which must be installed on the hard drive or a usb drive. BOINC runs under linux then.

Sony has not come forward with any way to run BOINC (as they do folding) under the Game O/S.

Let me see if I can find a former neighbor kid then. He used to talk about how he put Linux on a PS2, he was VERY good with computer programming. He went to the Olympics in Salt Lake several years ago for his networking abilities.

Don't bother, the PS2 is different from a PS3 and not powerful enough. It would run too slow for the current PS3 app which only has a 4 day deadline. Besides its not just a linux app, the app is written in code specific to the PS3. The PS3 has functions the PS2 does not, so it would not work. Results are needed back quicker. For this same reason PS3GRID does not run on CPUs, they are too slow in comparison (16 days for a CPU vs 1 day for the PS3 approximately). Now GPUs are more powerful than the PS3 even. You might get some regular boinc out of a PS2, but if you don't already own one its a waste of time and money trying. It would be like buying a Windows 95 computer to run boinc on.

All but 10 or so are graduate student machines (almost all of the old P4's 2.0Ghz - 3.0Ghz). Just couldn't stand seeing them do nothing for 2/3 to 3/4 of the day, and they have to be left on overnight for all their automatic updates (windows, anti-virus, etc.) and other network backups. Given their age, it will be interesting to see if they can make it to 6 million and beyond.

Oh don't worry about them stopping working on you, there are people here with some OLD machines. I have seen some PIII 900mhz machines in the stats! And my laptop here is only a 1.6ghz machine. Those machines should be running for several more years to come yet, and still be productive. Now your ranking will show a decline after the newer, faster quad core machines start coming in in droves, but that too should be awhile, since you have 43 machines!

I have a PIII running since 2000. Four other various processors since 2002ish, I do not have purchase records on those, but thay came after the PIII and before some others we bought in 2004. I've also got two older units, older than 2000 running, again no purchase dates. One I remember installing win 98 on it over top of novell netware when I got hold of it, the other I think had win 95. Some of these ran seti classic and then boinc since 2004. Most have been running with processor at full usage since initial startup. My latest ones are from 2006. Its time to upgrade, but unfortunately sales are not so good recently, maybe next spring or summer. First we need to survive the winter. I'll try to talk the boss into getting me twin quad cores and repalcing all the single cores with dual cores and a newer server with two processors all with NVIDIA GPUs. Oh, there I go day-dreamin' again.

Last year I dumped all my older than 2ghz machines, except my laptops, and have been wiping them out and after installing Ubuntu Linux on them donating them to the foster kids at work. I do remove all large hard drives, extra memory, etc before they get donated but I have 3 more pc's downstairs ready to go now and have already given 7 pc's this year alone. I still have some single cores I need to upgrade to dual cores and I have one more mb I can upgrade from a dual core to a quad core with just a cpu purchase. Too bad all you guys live the other side of the pond!!!!

My worries about the older grad student machines have more to do with use/abuse than age (though I am amazed at how many 6+ year-old hard drives are still kicking!). Hard to keep machines in good working order when so many people are using them, particularly when the users have no financial stake in the machines.

Oh, I still have a PIII 1.0Ghz crunching away, too. Used to be here at Malaria, but I moved it over entirely to PrimeGrid sometime ago where it is a bit of a better fit with some of the super-short workunit projects over there. My slowest here are probably the a couple of 2.0ghz P4's with a 400 Mhz bus...My Pentium M 1.73 laptop is lower frequency, but averages a better RAC with the newer architecture.

p.s. - @Mikey...That is great that you donate the old boxes to the kids. I really hate seeing serviceable machines age in needless disuse when so many without could benefit from them. Been able to get a few machines here to international students that can't afford their own, but we are typically fairly limited in how one can do it at the university with existing rules regarding "surplus equipment."

Congratz on the new milestone!

And yeah, would love the GTX280 card, too. Although, it might be worth the wait for the GTX350 (4th quarter 2008 release expected)...1250 GFLOPs (compared to 933 for the GTX280). Not that I can really afford either right now :(

Thank you all! I am not stopping, I have actually "fixed" one of my pc's so it is back up to a quad core instead of running as a single core machine. It had "issues" galore so I changed it from a Windows machine to an Ubuntu Linux machine and it seems to be doing MUCH better. It has only been a few days so no definitive answer yet, but if it stays working, it will stay on Linux.
The machine is here:

I do not think I can ever pass you as long as you continue to use the gpu. They are just too powerful of a cruncher. You started for PS3Grid just over a year and a half ago and already have over 3.25 MILLION credits from them!!!!!!!!
Question for you...can you crunch using both the gpu and cpu at the same time. I do not see me buying $400.00 gpu's anytime in the near future.

@Keith

Congratz! and I agree with Mikey...with those GPU's going few will catch you :)

@Mikey

Yes, you can crunch with both GPU and CPU at the same time. Current test version of BOINC is 6.3.21 (and we owe Keith a big thanks on getting this version working!). Seems to run quite well. I have a GeForce 9600GSO in my old Pent. D 830. One core runs full throttle while the other is divided between crunching and GPU "management" (0.9 for CPU crunching and 0.1 for managing the GPU) with the GPU crunching at full tilt.

Thank you for your kind words, I just helping where I can to improve boinc for everyone, this is something I can do.

You do have to share 1 CPU core with another project and the GPU proejct. The 0.9 is not the actual use of the CPU, it just indicates that the CPU/GPU application uses less than one whole CPU core, mostly for communication with the GPU. Right now it varies by o/s and a few other factors, it currently is between 2% and 40%. Linux I beleive is more efficient in this matter. Mine run around 20% of total CPU useage where 50% is one core. It is a small price to pay for the gain of the GPU use to science. So some other project runs a little slower at 30%, but at least it runs and is not idle.

@Mikey
Get the cheaper GPU's, you can find ones like I have 8800GT for around $200, wait for them to go on sale like I did, I bought mine when there was a rebate offered. Of course you may also need to beef up the power supply. For the GPU, the more shaders it has, the more it costs and the faster it runs the apps. Think of each shader as a co-processor. The best ones run task in 5 hours. Mine run 15 hours or so. So even I get beat by others. But it was what I could afford at the time. Also there is the issue of power usage. I found the ones I have use a relativly small amount, something like 65W, bettween full usage and basic system usage. I'm sure the bigger cards use more. So make sure your electric budget can absorb the extra cost.

@Anyone
If you plan on GPU crunching, visit www.gpugrid.net first and read some of the FAQs. Not all NVIDIA GPU's are capable. Make sure you check there before buying something so you don't end up with something useless.

Other existing projects are developing GPU applciations too.

In the future there will be ATI support. Don't ask how soon, I do not know any project has started to try to use it. But it is possible. Again there may be limits, not all ATI cards may be capable.

@Mikey

@Mikey (and Anyone, also)
My 9600GSO is just a bit slower than that (about 20 hours), but that makes sense given its 96 shaders vs. 112 in the 8800GT (I think?). At $85 (before the $30 rebate) it was a good deal. Mine is stable with my stock 375W power supply (the GPU card is rated at a top pull of 84W). Many of the high power cards can pull 150 - 200W, so you should view Keith's caution as a very serious one. One can probably get by with a bit lower PS than recommended (e.g., my card had a 400W min. recommendation), but I wouldn't push this too far. Also, make sure to have a well vented/fanned case. The GPU app. is similar in demand to a 3-D game running, so heating can be a problem.

Been quite in here.

Today I passed 4,000,000 at PS3GRID. Here I have just passed about 1,500,000 and soon, a week or less, my total will be 9,000,000

I have several new milestones I have hit recently:

12/9/2008 BOINC 7,500,000
12/8/2008 ABC 1,000,000

and soon I will have 3 million on Malaria!

It's okay, I forgive you ;-)))
I knew I was going to be beat by some since I moved some of my pc's away to ABC. I would have stayed here exclusively if there had been work for the foreseeable future. But since they announced a while back that work was being reduced, hopefully because answers are forthcoming, I moved some pc's away. All of my pc's now attached to Malaria are also attached to Rosetta too. I like the similar time to finish a work unit for both Projects. Einstein was taking over 30 hours to finish just one unit, that was just too long, for me, for a single core pc.

CONGRATULATIONS on your milestone and whatever you do KEEP CRUNCHING!!!

During the slowdown I hit a few milestones:

1/11/2009 BOINC 8,000,000

1/15/2009 ABC 1,500,000

1/11/2009 POEM 10,000

1/16/2009 Rosetta 40,000

The last 3 are moving along but the first, 8 million is a LOT!!!!

Had a couple of connection problems with two of my quads (one windows crash and reinstall, the other with a driver issue with the wireless adapter).

The quads are mostly at my father's company office (he is a contractor). Most of the other boxes are indeed a sort'a lab. They are the office machines for some the graduate students in my department. As a faculty member with real IT skills, I get stuck with maintaining them often, so I figured they could do some good'ol crunching when they are idle. ;)

Ooh I will just have to speed up a bit then! Actually it is getting warm in my basement, I may have to shut some pc's down soon. $500.00 a month electric bills is not my idea of fun right now!! It is currently down in the mid $300.00 range right now, summer means more a/c to offset warm computers.

You can buy most them anywhere on the net, shipping costs might be a problem to where you live though!! I just had to give up my ATI card and am in the process of swapping with my son. He has a CUDA card and I know it will work. I tried hard on Collatz trying to get my 4770 to work but there is no joy here!! I do have 2 CUDA cards working fine over there though!

I do have a question for you...what is the software requirement for CUDA right now on MilkyWay? I tried to attach my 2 CUDA cards there and it said the cards weren't good enough. I am sure it was card software as one is a 9600GSO and the other is a 9800 and Boinc is 6.6.36. I have not upgraded them in a while so I am thinking that is what it must be. I can do cpu crunching there just fine, just gpu crunching is the problem right now. I am too worried about it, Collatz said they are back up and running just fine now. So their server problems are hopefully over for a bit. I just kind of like the MilkyWay idea.

Milkyway is at the beginning of starting to play with nVidia CUDA cards. However, the mathematical precision they require for their science demands double precision which some ATI cards can provide (HD38xx and HD48xx series). There is a similar problem with CUDA and the cards that can do double precision, which I understand mainly need one of the nVidia GTX2xx and above to work.

What CUDA software is needed or the version of BOINC Manager I cannot give you an answer on.

I use both a ATI Radeon HD3850 (AGP version) and a PCI-E2 HD4850 for my RAC on 32 bit XP Pro SP3.

I am running BOINC Manager 6.4.7, and the ATI card uses an older ATI graphics card driver - the Catalyst 8.12 found here.

For Milkyway crunching I use the Gipsel 0.19f 32 bit anonymous platform. There is a newer version out now - 0.19g - but this is reported as being marginally slower than 0.19f.

I've made 19,000,000 overall today and 2,000,000 here last week.

Mikey, Why instead of kounting up towards infinity, don't you start at infinity and count backwards, like how many kredits you have to go.

I now have a Boinc total of 24,087,565!
And I don't know how many credits I have to go, it kind of depends on how many computers I can keep running after I retire again!

I didn't have Mikey down as one of those shy and retiring gents. Just retired, got fed up, come back then retire, etc.

Sort of...I was VERY happily retired for 3 1/2 years but my wife was still working. She called me up one day and said 'I submitted your resume(I didn't even know I had one), your interview is next week, my friend is on the panel, don't blow it'! I went in, in jeans and a polo shirt, breezed thru the interview and have been working ever since. I technically am an inventory guy doing pc related inventory for an agency of the local County Government, but in reality I do a whole lot more. The job is interesting, my hobby is computers, so how hard can it be. It is not as fun as my previous job, a paid firefighter for almost 24 years in another local jurisdiction, but it is still fun. And it gives me time off to crunch!

My RAC has been up and down, like a Bar Maids kn******, for the last 3 weeks due to the Milkyway servers going down numerous times.

Yeah I started crunching for DNETC and they give more credits than Collatz for ATI cards! I started 10 May 2010 and am already over 6 million there! I did have my Nvidia cards there too but have moved them back to Collatz. I do not have a video card that can crunch for MilkyWay.

Hi all,
I hit today a special milestone : 3,628,800 cs at BOINC combined !

Well done, and the next special milestone in that sequence will be reached circa November 17 2023. Hope you aren't in a hurry! :)

I'm not that smart....please explain the sequence.

Hi TGG,
Dont worry, it's not so smart ;)
3,628,800 is the result of 1x2x3x4x5x6x7x8x9x10 (named "factorial 10").
So the next milestone - in that sequence - would be factorial 11, ie 1x2x3x...x10x11 giving 39,916,800 !!!

So... keep crunching :)

Done !
More than 13 years in advance on the previously estimated date, thanks to GPU projects...

So now the next number in the sequence is 479,001,600, I guess we all have a ways to go to get there. GPU's are GREAT crunchers aren't they!

Picked up a lot of tasks today, for the first time in a long time. I thought this project had died, but it looks like that was just for me. 4 tasks returned already this month, and 30 credits! My RAC even went above Zero :) I might even get my 79,415 credits up to 80K.

Thanks Mikey, I added a couple more systems; seem to be doing ok for now - getting plenty of tasks. Hope to make it to 100K soon :)
This is one of several projects I would like to reach 1M on, but that is a long way off. I hope there are plenty of tasks for a long time.

Some old saying said 'slow and steady will win the day', it may have been the tortoise and the hair fairy tale, I don't remember. Anyway no one got to 1 million on their first day crunching, keep it up and don't quit and you WILL get there too!

Made it to 100,000, but I think my ambition got the better of me when it came to 1M. At my present and unsustainable rate, it would take 2 years. I think 5 or 6 is more reasonable.

You just need even more computers, you seem to working on lots of projects all at once, that just means more pc's are needed so you can focus one or two on Malaria!
I see where you changed a Linux machine into a Windows Server, that's cool!
Keep up the good work and above all never quit!

Your new ATI HD5770 card is really ramping up your RAC, and should add an additional 150K to 160K to your current median RAC. I would expect to see the new total stabilise at around around 500K.

Thank you! In the beginning, 1999, I started crunching Seti with a single core pc and 'cobblestones' weren't even thought of yet as credits. But with time, money and some gpu's thrown in my rac is now skyrocketing beyond my wildest dreams!! But to paraphrase Buzz Lightyear onward and upward we go "to infinity and beyond"!!

Well at my current rate of 469,035, since Dnetc is down, it will take me 55 days! BUT when Dnetc comes back up and my rac goes back up nearer 500k it will only take around 40 days! But either way I AM going to pass you, the difference is how soon that might be. I just checked and Dnetc knows what the problem is now and should be fixing it shortly.

Next Goal 100,000,000 which I should now make before then end of this month.

I broke the 100,000,000 limit !!!

My bill is not too bad. I've kind of figured out the three old P4-HT with one 8800GT use about $19 a month each. The two i7-12 cores with 3 GPUs each use about $48-61 a month. Add 2 bucks a day for A/C running. Fortunately our power company has one of the cheapest rates in the county. A couple months ago our bill was $100 but i only had 2 old computers running then, last month it was $265. It may go up another $40 for the next two hotter months.

For RAC points per dollar i'm doing good. I know some people doing around the same and they have a $500 electric bill.

Looks like that only too 10 days less than 2 months to RAC in the last 50M.

My next record will be in less days as I think as i've finally worked out all the bugs and the komputers have ALL the gpus running now, and soon they might even get turned back up to stock speed.
