We have reached the targeted number of approx. 2000 users , but will keep account creation enabled a little bit longer. Our goal is to get about 20000 results per day over the next few months. The 2000 user estimate was based on the activity of our first 500 users, among which we see a very high proportion of very active users. We will close account creation in the next 1 or 2 days.
Thank you all for your contribution, and a warm welcome to the new users!

Following the very positive publicity for our project at the weekend the number of users has increased very rapidly.
Many thanks to all of you who have joined!
We are still at early stages in getting our software to do all the things we would like. So far we have been working on optimising the parameters of our model.
We have one set of parameters that we are now almost ready to use for comprehensive analysis of our model predictions in the absence of malaria control.
We are therefore going to send out a set of work units representing different patterns of transmission that might occur across Africa.
Each of these simulations will return predictions of the corresponding age patterns of infection, illness , and mortality.

The current number of users is enough for us to continue testing the optimisation and to start making these baseline predictions.
We are just a small group of modelers and are still building up our capacity to generate useful work units and to process the results.
For this reason we are closing down registration of new users for the next few weeks.

Ours is not the only volunteer computing project that you can join.
Some of the projects can use as much computing power as they can get. We encourage anyone who has not been able to join malariacontrol.net to try out other projects on the BOINC homepage or the the BOINC wiki.

The www.ing.dk site/tech. newspaper/ Offical Danish Engineer Newpaper is also reporting this and propebly also its sister sites in other countries its cooperating with. This is where I came to know of this great project and as a SETI@home member/supporter -why not join?

I hope you finish the beta test ASAP, since there are sooooo many people who want to join the project, thanks to the too positive publicity for this being tested project.

BTW it seems better to set important thread like this sticky, since the non-marked thread cannot call our attention once it desappeared from the top of the list. For example, this thread, "July 21 2006 Batch of Wus", "Version 533" and "BOINC poll @ Berkeley" should be so. There is no better board than one in order.

We are now in a situation where we could provide work for more users. However, the current server hardware was struggling when we started the current phase with about 2000 users. We have since optimized the code for our assimilator, but are still planning to upgrade the hardware before opening again. An optimistic scenario: We get the hardware, set up the base system and migrate to this machine within the next month. At that point we will reopen.
Thanks
Nick

I was just going through BOINC Stats and noticed that quite a few hundred users are not active. Any chance of opening account creation for a few extra people...maybe 500?

Live long and BOINC!

I wonder if they've had troubles obtaining funding for new server hardware? If funding is the problem then I propose that MC sell points to raise cash. Money converts to electricity and client hardware which converts to points so why not eliminate the middle step and convert money directly to credits? It's a win-win deal any way you look at it.

Selling Credits (or complete Accounts for that matter) for Cash is widely regarded as unacceptable and low-life practice in the DC Community. Common perception is that people should work to get Credits, not buy simply buying them.

Other Projects have Donation options built-in, however. Either a simple Donation Page or implemented with additional gadgets (e.g. an optional Star displayed besides the Username over at SETI).

This principle so far worked very well and got them many thousand $ in Donations over time (depends on size and dedication of the Community of course).

No, money is not the issue with the new server. It's currently being installed at the University of Geneva and should come on the air soon. So we're not reduced to asking for donations yet - but thanks for the idea anyway!

I am so insulted. OK, fine. If my cash isn't good enough for them then I have no choice but to plonk it down on another crunch box to attach to their shiny new server. Bet they're sorry now, huh?

That's great news Ben, glad to hear it. Hope the new hardware installation goes smoothly.
