1.) This science app is currently very IO intensive. Your hard disk drive will get used quite frequently.

2.) We recently switched to a new server, so if you find something broken please let us know about it.

3.) The work here is generated dynamically. Shortly after the account creation is opened, I would expect the available work to dry up. Don\'t worry about it too much. Just try again a little while later as more work gets generated. After enough time has passed and all the new hosts are happily crunching, the available work will even out and the \"no work\" messages will become less frequent and eventually disappear altogether.

4.) You\'ll find that we\'re actually quite a friendly bunch on this project, but we don\'t usually say all that much unless there\'s a problem being discussed. If you need help with something, the \"being nice\" approach will probably work better for you.

5.) Try and have a little fun while you\'re participating and enjoy yourself!

6.) Welcome to MCDN. :)

Welcome all new users from the malariacontrol.net team!
We are now at a stage where we have more work ready than can be processed by the (very active) user base as of beginning of 2007. In order to complete these simulation runs, we hope that we can increase the computation rate by a factor two or three over the next couple of weeks. At that point we will close account creation again.

Please read Chris\' post above. A few more words on the application status: The science part of the current application is now well tested, but there remain a few issues with BOINC specific sections of the code(e.g. the checkpointing/IO issue mentioned above). We are working on that and hope to have a solution soon.

We are very happy to have you here and hope you enjoy crunching mcdn workunits and the friendly atmosphere!
All the best
Nick

I\'m happy to be on board too! I\'ve put my 4 computers to crunching, and they all seem to run fine :-)

Thanks for the welcome and a happy new year!

I just joined an hour or so ago. Processed two homework assignments already. Machine has two 3.06GHz hyperthreaded Xeon processors and 8 GBytes RAM, so they run pretty fast. malariacontrol is assigned 20% of the BOINC processing available. (The other biggie I have is climateprediction that gets 50%.)

Just joined aswell, after waiting for months. Atm it\'s just my little 1.3 GHz Celeron Laptop that\'s attached, but I\'m planning on attaching my 3500+ workstation aswell- not full time, though, since I also do Einstein@home (on both PCs) and CPDN on the workstation. Anyway, I\'ll see what I can do, and maybe persuade a few more people to donate crunching time since you are taking volunteers again. Happy to be aboard finally :-)

I wish to welcome any new participants to the project.

I would like to refresh some of the original points by Chris and add a few suggestions and notes.

  • Try and have a little fun while you\'re participating and enjoy yourself!
  • This project is in beta test stage. Expect a few errors from time to time. This is the goal of beta testing to smooth out any problems that might be accidentally introduced by the developers. They do their best to release bug free applications, but with so many different computer configurations it can not be guaranteed to always be perfect, as much as we all would like it to be.
  • Due to the nature of beta testing, there is the possibility for loss of credit or interruption of work. While it is a goal during beta testing to keep this to a minimum it does happen from time to time. Try to be understanding in this. If you cannot accept this then you should consider waiting until the project has finished this phase and join us then.
  • Kindly report any errors, problems or any questions in the message boards. Try to check the message board first to see if a thread has already been started covering your topic. Try to include some useful information so that others reading might understand the problem better and can better give assistance to the problem.
  • Please see the additional rules listed beside a new post. Lets keep things friendly and pleasant here as it has mostly been for the last year or more.
  • Try and have a little fun while you\'re participating and enjoy yourself!

What will happen now? We spend money, time and efford to mantain our PC, so that they can perform well for you, and all this work is just wipe out. Not even a single point for our effors.

Is there any way to have this problem fix. The system now says \"Couldn\'t send result\". What you want us to expect. I understand that at times things go the wrong way, but there should be some attemp to recognize the effors put by others.

Thanks

Hello all

Although I joined a few months ago, and crunched very slowly. I have now turned my 2 main rigs to MC. I hope they help with the required increase in crunching power.

I do not know if I count as a new user or not. I have received no work units in quite a while (I am not surprised by this). However, I notice the following files lying around that I do not suppose should be there. Should I remove any of them?

I'm a relatively new user to MC and so far have the following impressions:

  • MC WUs has short "lifespans" (3 days or so) and tend to hog Boinc.
  • Some of the WU's use a tremendous amount of memory! (1.2 Gb!).

Based on this, I've done the following:

  • disabled MC on one of my PC's (I've got 2) that only has 2 Gb. When a large WU was running, response time became horrendous.
  • Cut down the percentage of time devoted to MC to 16% (3 other projects share the rest).
    * Often click "no new tasks" for the project to stop MC from running shortlived WUs that won't finish in time.

I do not leave my PC's on 24/7 (better things to do with my life/money) and I am sure that has much to do with the short deadline problems, but hey it's my PC and it is a volunteer organization. Based on my experiences I'm thinking MC may not be the "best" fit for me, am I right? I'll continue to give MC a shot, but so far I'm liking WCG better...

You could be correct, MC has short deadlines because they tend to use the data resulting from our crunching in a more timely manor than projects that tend to collect alot more data. When a person 'catches' Malaria they could get up to like 17 different varieties of it, so giving one treatment to everyone would be silly. We crunchers have shown that some treatments work better with some strains than other treatments, that means that people ARE better off because of our crunching, hopefully other projects can say the same! There are also treatment differences based on how many of the different variations a person has and how old they are too, as well as how long they have had a particular variation as compared to another variation. Lots of things to consider means lots of possibilities for different treatments, meaning they need our results fast. And to be honest 24/7 crunching is better for MC than occasional crunching, which leads to alot of us having multiple pc's each crunching for our favorite project. There are a ton of Boinc projects out there and although you WILL be missed just keep crunching, who knows one day you just may find your way back here!
