Hi,

I am working to solve a problem with my PC\'s virtual memory (VM). I have two questions.

Question one: How do I detach a project?
Question two: If I do indeed have a memory leak, is it possible that a project is causing the problem, or would it be the Boinc application, if it isn\'t another program...?

Because I lack professional knowledge with computers, I am methodically trying to shut down one system process, at a time, while keeping the PC operating for prolong periods, so as to find out which application is causing my VM to clog.
I have been running three projects: SETI, Climate..., and Malaria...
Presently I am trying to disconnect from Malaria Control, but I can\'t figure out how to remove the project from my Boinc client\'s Task List. [I\'m not sure if suspending the code will suffice...] The \"Detach\" button doesn\'t work, detaching the BAM client did not seem to work, and at the web site for Malaria... , I can\'t find anything (within the time I have) to offer info on how to detach from a project.

To detach you should be able to just highlight the project on the BOINC manager\'s \"Projects\" panel (click on the project name), then click the \"Detach\" button on the left.

Both the BOINC client and the science applications you list have been running on thousands or millions of PCs, mostly without causing problem. climateprediction is known to be quite resource demanding, but should still run your computer.
You may want to track Mem usage of running processes in your Windows task manager, maybe this helps you find the problem.

It is Windows itself causing part of your problems. If you restart Windows about once a month most of your memory leak problems should go away. I have 22 computers running Boinc and Windows itself is the biggest problem. Yes any program running under Windows has memory leak \'issues\' but Windows itself is the main culprit. It doesn\'t fully shutdown a program when you stop using it, it keeps some of it in memory just in case you might want to use that same program again. That means that less and less resources are available as time goes by, causing slowdowns. Each successive version of Windows has tried to fix this problem, but MS STILL believes we tend to use the same program over and over and over again, shutting each down when we are done using it, leaving parts of it in memory to make it faster the 2nd, 3rd, etc time we open it.

To detach from a project just right click on the Boinc icon, then click Open Boinc Manager and go to the Projects tab, hi-lite the project you want to detach from and click the detach button on the left. If you have work from that project, you can first click the No New Work button and that will finish all existing work fro mthat project but get no new work from it, then you can detach gracefully. But if you just detach if you have work, it will just be issued to someone else when its return by date has passed. To get that unit re-issued right away, go to the Tasks tab and Abort each unit from the project you want to detach from, then go back to the Projects tab, select No New Work, and click the Update button. That will send to that project the fact that you aborted crunching those units, causing them to be sent to other computers and get no new work for your computer. Then when you click the Detach button and you will be gracefully detached from that project.
