Let's see if I can help here...to get a new computer up and running on a project...download Boinc on that computer and run it, when it comes to the project selection choose which one you want then when it comes to your account check that you already have one, assuming you are putting the new computer on a project you are already a part of, then it should download the required files including, in some cases, a short workunit so it can figure out how long your computer is going to take to crunch a unit. That's it, no troubles, no problems, the key is to install Boinc fresh on each machine, do not copy the Boinc directory from another machine, you need to install it on each machine individually.

Hello Mikey,

thank you for your reply!

I've done it in exact that way, went on a new machine, download the boinc from the website, ran the install-script joined the project, allright to this point.

But than the last installed machine is overwritten, the running task get the state "Client detached" and that machine woldn't start working itself. I've to reconnect the detached machine and download a new task, then this machine will work again.

If I install another machoine now, the last installed machine will detached the same way and so on.

Sorry about my poor english, the school is a long time ago...

How many computers do you have? I have seen a problem with too many computers in the display but not in the attaching. Are all these computers identical? That may cause problems too.

They are about 15 computers now, but the problem was the same as 5 or 10. Not all machines are equal and the problem occours always to the last connected computer (the first computer in the "your computers" list. the paradoxum is, that on this machine the tasks will canceled and nothing goes on until I reconnect to that computer and do anything on it as "project statistics" or so, than it downloads a new tasks and it should work again.

Are you thinking that because it is not on the top of the list it is losing Boinc? That is not correct, the top computer on the list is just the latest computer to connect to the Projects Servers. Computers will move up and down the list as they either connect or other computers connect. I always look at the bottom of the list to see which computer(s) haven't connected yet today. Then I will log in and make them connect, which moves them to the top of the list.

Hello Mikey,

no no no, it's not so simple ;)

Just an example:

I've 2 computers, one of them is already installed and running a task.

I'm in the boinc-manager, connected to the running host.

Then I want to install the second computer:

Connect via ssh to the 2. machine,
download the boinc software
install the software

Now I connect the boinc-manager to the 2. computer
It wil show me the assistant to join a project.

I join the malariaproject.net and I use the same account (mailadress and password)

At this point on the first computer the running task gone detached and no new task is loading.

In the computers list on the website, the name of the 1. computer is changed to the name of the 2. computer and it shows the already finished tasks as tasks of the new computer!

if I now connect the boinc-manager to the first computer again and do anything that the computer will reconnect to boinc, it starts working again and all is okay. But the previos task is destroyed (state is "computer detached").

if the secound computer now finished his first own task the boinc-website shows both computers and now there is no problem more.

In other words: every time i install a new computer, the last connected host in the boinc-manager will cancel the just running task and doesn't work itself as long as i connect the boinc-manager to that computer again and do something like refresh the project-stats or so.

if the new machine has finished at last one task, all is going right again.

I see the problem but don't know how to fix it. You need to physically log onto each computer locally, not remotely, then attach to a project. I think your problem is that the computer you are on thinks you are doing things to it, not the remote computer. You could also try a different remote software, SSH seems to be the source of your problems.

Hello,

many thanks for your abswer!

I have to install the boinc-software via ssh, because the computers are in a datacenter about 600 km away. also there is only fetching the software with wget and install it using the downloaded script. Then I start the daemon with the rpc-option and connect to the computer with the boinc-manager to join the project, that's all. And just then, the last computer installed break the running tasks, last connected or not is no reason. it must have doing something with the last joining to boinc. i have not found any other circumstance but this.

Has nobody any idea?

Have you tried suspending all workunits on the computer likely to be detached, and leaving them suspended until the new computer returns and reports at least one workunit?

Have you tried telling the BOINC client in the computer likely to be detached to disable its use of internet, but not suspend any workunits, from before the new computer attaches to the project until it has been returned and reported?

Also, is the disk space in which you are installing BOINC shared between the two machines? I doubt that it's a good idea to let them share the BOINC disk space.

Another idea - have you tried running the local end of the remote procedure call program on a machine that doesn't have BOINC installed, then making sure that the BOINC installation and connection to the project don't create a BOINC directory on the machine where you ran the remote procedure call program?
